Qualification in Building Social Capital

This qualification brings the best of building social capital techniques together with the theory of learning in the workplace: It empowers students to become reflective practitioners within a modern world of public service.

The student completes modules to the value of 15 Open College network credits. The 15 credits are made up of three compulsory modules:

  1. Reframing community engagement (2 credits)
  2. Coding and analysing qualitative data (2 credits)
  3. Rethinking Public Service – Building social Capital (7 credits)

The client chooses which two strengths based methods they would like their staff and communities to learn about, from the following list (each worth two credits):

  • Appreciative Inquiry
  • World Cafes
  • Positive Deviance
  • Participatory Budgeting
  • Qualitative Asset Mapping
  • Understanding Coproduction

Who is the product for?

Staff, communities and partner agencies = preferably all three do it together and learn with each other.

The Process

This is most often delivered through a blended learning process which means students do the knowledge acquisition through our online learning platform – MutualiLearn – and then reflect on their practice through face to face experience sessions, online webinars and tutorials with their allocated personal tutor, and in person action learnings sets.

Students are assessed through the following means:

  • Online quizzes
  • Learning journals
  • Reports
  • Film
  • Short essays

The full qualification takes approximately 12 months to complete subject to the commissioning organisation enabling students to practice and apply their learning.

Why not develop your own internal academy of practitioners to help shift the culture of engagement in your organisation?

Case Studies

This is a new qualification in 2017 and has been piloted by a large cohort of 460 learners across the West Midlands. Final adaptions will be made in March 2018 to reflect their feedback and to ensure the best quality learning experience is assured for your teams.

We will write up the learning from the case study by June 2018 but we are very happy to share with potential clients before then as many changes are being made as we progress and the new model will be available in March 2018.
